      <image:title>Home</image:title>
<image:caption>Seeds thrive when embedded in the communities they nourish. Who controls seeds, and who can (and cannot) grow them, as well as how they are grown, play a critical role in the future of our food systems. 90% of the genetic diversity of our food has disappeared over the last 100 years, resulting in crops that cannot adapt to meet the extreme environmental upheaval that is underway. Most of the seed used by farmers and gardeners alike is owned and controlled by a handful of corporations, severed from any cultural and historical significance. We believe seed belongs in the hands of people growing food for their communities—a belief we pursue through participatory breeding efforts, education, and collaborative projects in our local community and nation-wide.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ronny Bramwell of Westport, MA has grown this northeast-adapted okra variety for many years. He brought seeds to one of our Seed School sessions with his blessing to carry it on. Seeds are direct-sown in early June, and by mid-July are covered in blooms and pods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Also known as the Westport turnip or the Bristol white turnip, this beauty is botanically a rutabaga (brassica napus). It was first popularized in Westport, MA by brothers Aden and Elihu Macomber, who acquired seed from the Philadelphia World's Fair Expo in 1876. Its unique white flesh is sweet and crunchy with a slight sharp bite. Rare outside of southeastern MA and Rhode Island, it has been preserved and celebrated by the local community for 150 years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ali Baba was first introduced in the U.S. in the 90s by Iraqi seed saver Aziz Nael, and this particular strain is a cross of seed domesticated in the U.S. along with seed brought more recently from Iraq in 2021. We received this seed from our friends at the Iraqi seed collective.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Varietal Preservation - Banadura Baladiyya</image:title>
<image:caption>This tomato landrace has ancestry in the Beit Omar/Hebron region of the West Bank, in Palestine. We received these seeds from Vivien Sansour of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library, to multiply and steward as part of their Seed Protectors coalition. They grew the most beautiful pink and red deeply-ribbed fruit. From Vivien’s website: “Heirlooms, which have been carefully selected by our ancestors throughout thousands of years of research and imagination, form one of the last strongholds of resistance to the privatization of our life source: the seed.”</image:caption>
